Hernia Tool

This strange surgical tool from the 1850′s was used to restore the affected area after a hernia was removed. More specifically, it would be left inside the body for a week to produce scar tissue that would help seal the hernia off. I think I would rather take my chances without that thing stuck in me for a week, thank you.
